How to refinish woods windows

Photo 1: Match the onetime stain

Carefully remove the wood cover of the casement operator (or other slice of trim) and employ it to friction match the stain.

Photo 2: Scrape off loose finish

Use a sharp scraper to remove quondam finish. Pull the scraper smoothly and carefully to avert gouging the wood.

Photo 3: Sand worn cease

Sand side pieces heavily in worn-out areas and lightly elsewhere. Terminate at edges or corners adjacent to undamaged wood.

Photo iv: Use stain and end

Rub stain into the sanded sections of the window. Wipe off quickly, then apply more as needed to darken the color.

Forest windows with a natural end on the inside look cracking when they're new, merely wet, temperature swings and harsh sunlight eventually make the varnish fade and flake away, especially along the lesser of the window sash and on the sill. Information technology looks like an intimidating job, but usually the only role of the window that needs work is forth the bottom—the rest of the sash and trim tin can only exist lightly sanded and recoated.

The first step is to match the stain and terminate. The easiest way to exercise this is to take a piece of the trim to a paint shop to have it matched (Photo 1).

Scrape whatever worn varnish off (Photograph ii), and then sand with 120- or 150-grit sandpaper. In partially damaged areas, feather the sanding into the undamaged areas, and so lightly sand the residual of the piece to prepare it for a new finish (Photo three). You don't need to sand and recoat the entire window if only a few pieces need it—only stop at an edge or corner.

Stain the woods (Photo four) and utilize 2 coats of outdoor-grade end. If the gloss doesn't match the older varnish, buff it lightly with actress-fine steel wool or pad to dull it.
